Three Winners from the Ypsomed Innovation Fund

The founding teams of SurgeonLabs, Babyla and 8photonics have won the Ypsomed Innovation Fund.

SurgeonsLab (1st prize), Babylat (2nd prize) and 8photonics (3rd prize) are this year's winners of the Ypsomed Innovation Fund. The innovation prize, endowed with a total of CHF 100,000, promotes research, development and technology transfer in the Swiss Plateau and encourages researchers to seek knowledge transfer into the private sector.

The award ceremony took place in early January. The first prize of 50,000 CHF, went to SurgeonsLab. The second prize of 30,000 CHF went to Babylat and the third prize of 20,000 CHF went to 8photonics. All three awarded projects come from researchers at the University of Bern. The prize amounts are donated by the Ypsomed Innovation Fund foundation and the consulting company PwC Bern.

Despite Corona, we received 21 project submissions. The top-class jury selected the three most promising projects. I am very pleased with the entrepreneurial commitment shown by students at the university and the university of applied sciences said Simon Michel, President of the Ypsomed Innovation Fund, on this year's award ceremony.

The Ypsomed Innovation Fund Foundation aims to promote knowledge and technology transfer to universities and technical colleges in Espace Mittelland. She wants to motivate innovative and entrepreneurial teams or individuals to include market needs in their scientific work and to convert their developments into products or services on the market. The presented work should therefore contain innovative and economically feasible processes, methods, products or services.

The current winners at a glance:

1st prize: SurgeonsLab

The surgical treatment of brain aneurisms is demanding and requires the highest precision. Even the smallest mistake can cause bleeding, which further impairs the surgeon's limited vision and complicates the procedure. The training of surgeons for this operation is correspondingly time-consuming and risky for patients. SurgeonsLab has developed a simulator that carries out such complex interventions on the model. The simulator operates brains produced using the 3D printing process, which have patient-specific features. It simulates the procedure with the actual physiology of the patient. In this way, trained surgeons can practice complex procedures and acquire the necessary routine. In addition, the interventions can be simulated on a model that is anatomically tailored to the patient, which reduces the risk of the intervention. 2nd prize: Babylat

Breast milk is the ideal nutrition for newborns. Premature babies with a low birth weight also require nutritious developmental support; mostly it is milk enriched with proteins. However, these products are either expensive or they are based on cow's milk, which lacks various beneficial properties of breast milk. Babylat has developed a system that ensures optimal food supply for premature babies. It is a filter system that concentrates proteins from human donor milk. The breast milk is then enriched with this concentrate. Because the system can be placed in the clinic, it is cheaper than existing offers. An increase in premature births has been observed in pediatrics. Accordingly, the demand and importance of development-promoting, healthy nutrition for premature children with very low birth weights is increasing. Babylat's system is a cost-effective solution that meets a growing need.

3rd prize: 8photonics

Empirical research in laser technology also brings with it very specific problems: experimental set-ups quickly become confusing and, moreover, established experiments cannot be transported - challenges that are familiar to every research team in photonics. The team from 8photonics - a spin-off from the University of Bern - has found a way to master this challenge. It developed a kind of modular system that enables experiments in the field of lasers or OCT (photonics) to be set up cleanly and to transport these structures to other locations. The jury believes that with its solution the team has found a quasi-standard for such experimental set-ups and that it will make the lives of many researchers more transparent.
